Apprentice Bricklayer wins Bronze in national competition

Congratulations to Lee Fairall; apprentice bricklayer with Jessup who was awarded bronze in the recent regional heats of the prestigious SkillBuild competion.

SkillBuild is the largest multi-trade competition in the country for construction trainees and apprentices, covering ten crafts, including brickwork, carpentry and painting and decorating.  Run by CITB-ConstructionSkills, the 2012 West Midlands regional heats took place on Thursday 26th April at South Birmingham College, and involved students working on test plans which took a day to complete

The test pieces undertook during the competition were designed to challenge the ability of entrants to follow detailed instructions, produce accurate and neat work outputs, be economical with materials while working to strict timescales – all essential requirements for today’s construction industry.  The highest scorers from the regional events will now be put forward to compete in the national final.

Barry Hill, Curriculum Manager for Construction at Walsall College said: “We are delighted that four of our students came away from the regional SkillBuild heats with medals.  Participating in competitions is a great way for students to test their skills against their peers and hone their technical abilities, whilst working under pressure.  I have been extremely impressed with the professional approach the students have taken and their willingness to compete"
